Greenland and York connect around homelessness

Lived Insights were excited to hook up again with Steven Arnfjord at York’s Tourism Voice conference last week.
Steven, from Ilsimatusarfik’s Centre for Arctic Welfare, hosted the visit to Greenland that Miles attended in May this year with the Good Organisation to discuss the opportunities for people experiencing homelessness, many from the Inuit communities, to set up their own social enterprise offering bespoke tour’s for tourists visiting the beautiful country of Greenland.
Steven also introduced Miles to various services offering a variety of support to the homeless. Miles gave a presentation to the community whilst there, and then they spent a few days visiting the wide ranging residential areas and understanding how they affected the lives of people when migration plans by the Danish government were introduced back in the 1970’s and up to this day.
A reflection from Miles – “It was fascinating speaking with those impacted then, and even today, seeing the struggles and tenement block’s strategy – in particular the ‘Block P’ outcomes. I have to give a big shout out to Kimi, his stories were epic and so, so authentic.”
Lived Insights have previously accepted invitations to Budapest in Hungary, Trieste in Italy and Basel in Switzerland to understand the impacts on people experiencing homelessness, so this latest visit gives us a real understanding of many similarities across different countries in what people face.
All brilliant research visits which helps us try and influence changes here in the UK in the work we seek to do around homelessness in particular.
