125th Rowntree Anniversary Poverty Map of York
York is often seen as a prosperous city, but around 6% of people live in some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in England. Poverty and inequality are still a reality for many people in York.
To mark the 125th anniversary of Seebohm Rowntree’s Poverty: A Study of Town Life, Lived Insights and Healthwatch York will explore what poverty looks like in York today putting the voices and experiences of local communities at the heart of the research.
The project will be led by Community Researchers from the Lived Insights Community Café at St Denys on Walmgate. Recruited for their local knowledge, community connections and lived experience of financial hardship, they are uniquely placed to reach people and communities who are often underrepresented in traditional research.
Together, the Community Researchers will capture local stories, explore neighbourhood experiences and map the realities of poverty across York. The research will look at the factors driving hardship, the impact it has on everyday life and ideas for creating change.
Community Researchers will gather first-hand experiences through semi-structured interviews, storytelling and transect walks, exploring people’s experiences and the environments in which they live.
The project will bring together these personal stories and local insights to create a contemporary picture of poverty in York connecting the experiences of today with Rowntree’s pioneering work 125 years ago.
