Astrid Hanlon
Hi I’m Astrid, I live in York and come from a background in environmental research and conservation. The path that’s truly shaped me has been anything but straight, it’s meandered, often painfully, etched with learning along the way. There’s been some tough chapters, single motherhood, addiction, facing the criminal justice system and times of hidden homelessness.
These experiences have opened my eyes to how complicated, overwhelming, and often unfair the system can be for people just trying to get back on their feet. But they also showed me the power of community, the strength in shared stories, and the real possibility of change when people with direct experience come together.
Now, I’m using what I’ve learned to be part of that change. I want to work alongside people who’ve been there, to work collaboratively in defiance of the labels we may be given, beyond the confines of roles we may hold, and help build a future where no one is left behind.

Miles Goring
Hi, I’m Miles. I live in York and, after more than 20 years in the financial sector, went on to lead a housing scheme supporting councils across North Yorkshire. I’ve brought up my family here, so I care about the future of our community.
My own path hasn’t been straightforward. In my forties, I faced significant challenges with mental health and addiction and ultimately became homeless in my late 40’s. It took me into my mid-50’s to find a new way of living and feel secure again.
Those experiences showed me how complicated and fragmented support systems can be, particularly when people are at their most vulnerable. They also ignited my passion for change, making sure people with lived experience have an opportunity to shape the services designed to support them.
That’s why I’m proud to be part of Lived Insights. I want to help build a future where communities are listened to, their knowledge is valued and services are designed around what people actually need. Ultimately, I’d love to see community-led research embedded across York, helping drive positive change across the city.
